Family Matters

The thing was that the fellow schoolmate did not like Sebastian. He was always so popular and he got good grades and he drew attention in the school. When he got to the door he went in with the little girl. They had dropped hands when they both arrived at their driveway.
"Welcome home Claude." a voice called from the living room. Claude put down some of his stuff and went to the stairs.
"hey mom." he called not looking at the woman watching T.V. He ran upstairs and started homework and Laura went in and sat on his bed. She did not have anything else to do.
"Hey Claude?" Laura asked propping her self up on the chair beside the desk. Claude turned around.
"yes Laura?" He said smiling a bit. He pulled out his math book from his backpack and opened it up looking back fully interested in her question.
"I know mom loves us but..." She was stopped in the middle of her sentence,
"what Laura?" He said quietly trying to think of what she was going to ask. He knew their father left when they were little leaving the two small children with their mother. Claude looked at his half sister Laura, yes half sister. Claude was the one. Laura was the normal child of the small family. "Why did dad leave us?" She asked. She knew he had left when she was 3 but she did not know the reason why. Claude sat looking down and putting his hands on his forehead as he leaned over to mildly tell her. He knew a bit but all he could tell her was it was all a mystery.
He did not wish to go into details right now. He had a lot on his plate for that night.
"Laura, why don't you read for a bit, and let me think on that."
Claude, even though they were not blood related, knew his sister well. Laura loved reading. She told him somedays that reading was like dreaming. She could sit in her bed and read away and cover 4 books by mid morning. When she had time off at school she read instead of playing on the play ground. The girl would find a spot up on the embankment under the shade of a big fruit tree and when they were ripe she would pick them and eat the fresh fruit while she read for what seemed like hours, smiling. She was only in 3rd grade, but she could read at a 5th grade level.
Laura nodded respecting the response her big brother gave her. She picked out a story or two or three, and hopped on the bed and leaned against the big soft comfortable pillow and opened to page one in her book. She thought about why Claude was not completely honest with her. She could tell by the way he hesitated and slowly, softly answered, he was hiding something. She glanced at him as he flipped e pages and touched the sharp tip of his pencil on a sheet of notebook paper every now and then. She went back to reading and fell asleep. Claude turned around four hours later and looked softly and with much concern thinking about the question she had asked and he got up, took the book from her loose grasp and picked her up bridal style and carried her over to her bed and tucked her in for the night. He kissed her good night and watched as she stirred in her sleep grabbing the covers and pulling them up to her face yawning. Claude turned out his desk light, the only light that shone in the room, and got himself situated in his bed. He was thinking that one day he would find his true father and ask him why he was not there for Laura when she really needed him. He sighed lightly as his eyelids met in the middle and he slipped into a deep sleep. He had nothing to worry about because Laura was on the otherside of the room safe, asleep in her bed. Both of them snug in their beds and dreaming about their tomorrow's.
